Giovedì nel mondo - Thursday around the world

Tipiche matrioske in versione "spose"

Thursday around the world

Well, even today that is bank holiday (happy 1st May to all of you!) I enjoy myself travelling virtually around the world and today we go directly to Russia! I premise immediately that due to the vastness of the territory and the huge amount of different ethnicities existing in this region, it's really impossible for me listing every single type of tradition and custome and I'm quite sorry for this because there are so many really suggestive rites and cerimonies. So I just , let's say unfortunately , give a little "dust" of some of the traditions of the weddings nowdays. Perhaps in the future I'll do some more post specifically for some of those particular ethnicities just to have a little more fun :-).

Let's begin with the engagement: actually in the anciet russian traditions the period of engagement didn't exist and so the engagement ring...infact , as in many other cultures, even in Russia the couples were combined by a real professionist: the "matchmaker". The family of the boy or the girl used to ask to this matchmaker to find a good companion for their son/daughter basing the choise on the social status and the economic possibilities. The date of the wedding used to be fixed really quickly: form 1 up to 3 months.

In the last decades the catholic-ortodox weddings increased a lot but even nowdays this religious cerimony hasn't got any legal value so the couple has to celebrate even the civil one. Despite the vast majority of the weddings are celebrated in western-modern dresses lots of future brides even nowdays, as in anciet traditions expecially for the poorest families, use to sew their own wedding dress made of white fabric since sewing and needlework are scolastic subjects so every girl , good or not, is able to prepare a dress...lucky them!.. the white color today is symbol of purity and joy but in the past it was considered also a mournful color. Infact the bride leaves the family house to go with a complete unknow person ..so it's quite a little funeral.

Typycal wedding russian dolls

The brides veil was really important in Russia: the groom was not allowed to see the bride's face untill the end of the wedding penalty endless disasters and moreover the veil had the task to protect the bride from evil spirits. For this purpoes even the bridemaids (dressed with a similar dress to the bride's one) hade (still now) a really important role as they always remained around the bride to protect her again from those evil spirits. These spirits so confused with all those " fake brides" just disapper. ..from this the usage of dressing the bridemaids with dresses similar to the bride's one...who would have ever imagined it?

The russian wedding usually last for two days this because the real wedding begin the night before the cerimony at the bride's home where the bridemaids prepar the bride with a purifying bath and with the rite of the habit. They wait then for all the night for the groom who in the past used to arrive in the morning on a white horse asking to "bring him his princess"...what a man!...

Big celebrations are held even today full of any kind of food, alcohol and music and also the poorest families are able to organise this kind of huge cerimonies with the help of all the families invited. The traditional food is bread which is the typical symbol of good luck and abundance.

The usual special particularity?: the bride always wore really fantastic shoes because , even nowdays, it's believed that from the beauty of her shoes you can understoodd her ability as good housekeeper and administrator of the family. Infact it's a belief that the woman buoght her shoes from the savings...so better and more beautifull are her shoes the more she was a fantastic housewife! This is so important for them even today and if you take a look at russian women you can notice that they are always so well dressed! It is a really important aspect for them.

Ahahah :-) so I am the goddess of the housewives according to how many shoes I have!..ahah

and these are some fantastic bride russian dolls that you can find on lust-led they can be personalised according to the bride's dress and her somatic features..fantastic gift isn't it? A nice present for the groom for the first night!

  2. Lasciamo perdere oggi... mi son giá incavolato coi miei e stasera devo pure sorbirmi mia sorella.
